  6. The gateway allows users of Notework, the 5K Pop-Up Electronic Mail Package
  7. for Novell LANs to exchange messages with Unix based mail systems.
  8.  
  9. Using the Notework/UUCP gateway, a dedicated MHS/PC on the LAN can
  10. automatically dial in to a Unix machine and exchange messages with Unix
  11. based mail networks using the "g" protocol.  The capability to auto-dial
  12. directly from a PC into the Unix mail system is unique.

  14. Other vendors offer SMTP connections which require a hardwired TCP/IP network
  15. connection to a Unix machine.  The Notework gateway does not require any
  16. TCP/IP connection or software.

  18. When mail arrives for the PC LAN from a Unix based machine, the user is
  19. notified by a tone and a flashing symbol in the corner of the screen.  The
  20. user can pop-up from within any application to read and answer the mail.

  22. One key application for the Notework/UUCP gateway is to access the Internet
  23. mail system.  The Internet connects computers at major companies, government
  24. installations, and universities around the world.  Huge amounts of mail
  25. travel over the Internet everyday.  Service organizations like UUNET offer
  26. dial in access to internet mail for fees as low as $25 per month but require
  27. UUCP connections.  The Notework/UUCP gateway provides access to these UUCP
  28. connections at very reasonable costs.

  30. The Notework/UUCP gateway supports multiple attachments under RFC 1154
  31. specification on the Unix side and under MHS the 1.5 specification on the
  32. LAN side.

  34. UUCP is the basic networking utility that comes standard with ALL Unix
  35. distributions and has been part of the basic distribution since the mid 70's.
  36. Many Unix machines today communicate using TCP/IP but TCP/IP requires a hard
  37. wired network connection between machines.  UUCP requires only RS-232 ports.

  39. UUCP IS THE COUNTERPART TO MHS IN THE UNIX COMMUNITY

  41. It operates in much the same way as MHS.  Machines poll each other at
  42. pre-defined times or when there is mail to send, and exchange messages.  On
  43. every connection, any mail waiting for the remote host is sent across. After
  44. all messages destined for the remote host have been sent across, the exchange
  45. is turned around so that any mail on the remote host destined for us is sent
  46. to us.

  48. Typically, as with MHS, the connections are established over modems and phone
  49. lines. (Although null-modem cable connections can be used for machines in the
  50. same building.)  Like MHS, UUCP has a few large public "hubs" that can be
  51. accessed by the general public (uunet,psi,...).  However unlike MHS, UUCP by
  52. nature of its long term existence is international with more than 1 million
  53. nodes.  Certain modems have even been tailored to optimize UUCP connections.
